Azymuth, from Brazil, features veterans of a younger generation. The band made its name in the bossa nova age, packed up in 1987 and reappeared eight years later, since when it has been a regular visitor to the studios. It has developed with the times and now lives on a chilled-out edge between bossa and jazz, the harmony rich in major sevenths and ninths, the dynamics soft.
Performances on Brazilian Soul extend themselves generously, not so much building up as proliferating. Rhythms and voices lean in a more traditional direction, instrumental solos in a more cosmopolitan one, especially the long, light-toned keyboard fantasies which are a dominant feature.
