BOUBACAR TRAORÉ is one of the senior voices of musical Mali, singing here with guitarist Habib Koité and an array of traditional and imported acoustic instruments – the first track features a violin. The modes, melodies and sometimes the rhythms speak to many of the source of the blues, minus of course the three-chord trick that the American style took from the hymn book. Still, the expressive immediacy of these quietly intense, moving songs tells its own story.
