Kris Drever - Mark the Hard Earth

Orcadian artist kris drever’s debut scooped a BBC Folk Award in 2007. This solid follow-up has been delayed by side projects and a ‘day job’ with avant-folkies Lau. Once again Mark The Hard Earth finds fiddler John McCusker producing, and the emphasis on local songwriters, with brother Duncan Drever’s ‘The Crown Of London’ a highlight.

Once again Mark The Hard Earth finds fiddler John McCusker producing, and the emphasis on local songwriters, with brother Duncan Drever’s ‘The Crown Of London’ a highlight.

There are touches of country and gospel, a couple of sentimental waltzes, and lots of sturdy Scottish melodies. Drever’s guitar makes him a popular session musician, but the greatest draw is his warm, nasal brogue. Jon Lusk
