If 40 seconds of Inuit throat-singing seems mean, by the time you’ve heard nearly an hour of the equivalent from TUVA, growled out by the lead singer of Yat-Kha, you may decide the Rough Guides chose wisely. He’s accompanied in various shades of punk, but the pleasures of variety run out after about four tracks.
Some textural interest comes with a tenor who sings two octaves above the growl, while a couple of pounding dances provide relief. Energy is never in doubt. The live experience of Yat-Kha is probably more engaging, but on disc, you need to be a Tom Waits fan.
