Deborah Coleman inhabits another men’s world: Chicago-style electric blues, in which she has built up a big following around the USA. On What about love?, she sings with energy and a mellow timbre, but the real distinction comes in her fluent, voluble guitar breaks.
British followers may think of early Eric Clapton, though she is more focused, and some of the best soaraway moments are quite short. Much of the material is her own, soaking up the pop end of the blues tradition as well as the fundamentals – there’s an old Everly Brothers song as you’ve never heard it before. The deep-toned band rounds out a thoroughly absorbing issue.
