Violinist Isabelle Faust teamed up with Les Siècles for this period-instrument take on Stravinsky’s masterful and unshowy Violin Concerto. The instrumental casting meant for a more subtle and varied soundworld, our review saying, ‘the gut strings imbue Faust’s solo part with the limpid texture of finely wrought glassware rather than hard steel.’

This release of Nielsen’s concertos was a great denouement to Fabio Luisi’s impressive survey of the Danish composer’s orchestral works (both in concert and a series of recordings). These characterful works were brought to vivid life by their respective soloists, in fine dialogue with Luisi and the Danish National Symphony.

This impressive album gathered large-scale works by the Bulgarian-British composer in honour of a successful run as the Hallé’s composer-in-residence. The pair of concertos showcase not only Tabakova’s penchant for expression, lyricism and raw emotion, but the great talents of Maxim Rysanov and Guy Johnston, the latter giving ‘a towering performance’.
